Where’s the System Restore service gone in my Vista Home Premium ?
Have you ever wondered what you can do if the System Restore function is not active anymore on Windows Vista ? Here’s what happened to me : I wanted to create a new system restore point and the button was not available. That was possible due to using a “tweaking” program and not paying enough attention to setting I’ve changed. Anyway…
I rushed to Computer Management (right clicked on Computer icon and selected that) then I started looking for the System Restore Service, as the service was known in Windows XP. No sign of it ! I started to worry about system settings being altered by some virus or malware crap. But here’s what I found : the System Restore is now called Windows Backup.
Here’s how to set up the service in order to be able to use system restore again :
Finished Installing Windows Vista SP1 ? Now Remove All The Junk Files
When you install Windows Vista Service Pack 1 on your computer, the SP1 installer will not remove the older versions of Vista files from the hard drive. This is because the older files may be required in case you decide to uninstall SP1 later from the system.
Naturally, these files occupy important disk space. If you are satisfied with the performance of Windows Vista SP1 and unlikely to remove it later, why not reclaim some disk space by removing all the older Vista files.
Thereare no manual steps involved. Just open your Windows command prompt and type vsp1cln.exe (short for Vista SP1 Cleaner). It takes less than a minute to execute.
*vsp1cln.exeis added to your Windows Vista System folder after you install Vista SP1.

This will make Windows Vista Service Pack 1 permanent on this computer. All the older files are deleted now and your hard disk has tons of extra space for other important files like videos and photos.
Your computer need not be connected to the Internet for running the Vista SP1 cleaner tool. And you won’t be able to remove Windows Vista Service Pack 1 later.
